Gum Plant & Hover Fly
Gum Plant (Grindelia stricta) & Hover Fly (Syrphid fly)

These "flower flies" of the large Syrphidae family are important pollinators. Many species have black and
yellow bands, closely imitating bees and wasps. Bees, however, have two pairs of wings, flies only one pair.
Bees also generally have long antennae, flies, short. Compared to a bee, flies have very large eyes. This fly
is probably a female as the eyes of male hover flies meet at the top of the head.
